Benefits of Water Softeners
Improved Water Taste
A water softener can help reduce both the hard minerals in your water and the amount of chlorine in your water. Chlorine is a chemical added to the water supply by your city or county. It’s used to purify the water and kill bacteria and other organisms that may be present in your drinking water. If you get too much chlorine in your system, it can affect the taste of your drinking water, making it taste metallic or soapy. You may also notice a chlorine smell when you turn on an open faucet.
Less Scale and Scum Buildup
Scale buildup can cause damage to pipes and appliances. The scale that builds up in your water pipes can clog them, leading to leaks. It’s also not good for appliances like dishwashers, washing machines and water heaters as they can become damaged by the scale build-up. Water softeners are designed to remove the scale and prevent it from building up again!
Softer Skin and Silkier Hair
A soft water softener system will also help reduce the amount of soap and shampoo you need to wash your hair. Without it, you may have to use more than recommended to get the job done. Your skin will be softer, too! It’s no secret that hard water can dry out your skin and leave it feeling tight after a shower. But with a softened water system in place, there won’t be as much buildup on your skin’s surface—so less soap is required for each wash.
You’ll also notice less dryness in your hair when using a home softener system. Your scalp will thank you for this one! The same goes for split ends: they’ll become more manageable without all those minerals weighing them down (and causing breakage).
Keeps Stains Off Dishes
A soft water system is great for washing dishes. If you’re used to hard water, you may notice that your towels are stiffer and more difficult to clean after being washed in soft water. But don’t worry—they will soften up over time as they continue to get used and washed!
Soft water also makes cleaning clothes much easier than with hard water. Hard water can leave mineral deposits behind in the washer or on your clothes that won’t come out when you wash them, even if you use detergent or bleach (though these products do help). Softening your water will make those stains disappear!

Water Softener Repair FAQ
WHAT IS A WATER SOFTENER?
The main purpose of a water softener is to remove the hardness from water. Hardness in water is caused by calcium and magnesium ions that are naturally present in some water sources. These minerals build up over time and create a substance called scale, which clogs pipes, causes appliances to malfunction and reduces energy efficiency – not to mention being unsightly!
Water softeners use salt (aka sodium chloride) to remove these minerals from the water. The salt passes through a tank with an ion exchange resin where it exchanges places with the calcium or magnesium ions that are dissolved in your tap water. Once all of those have been replaced by sodium, you’re left with softer-than-normal H2O that won’t clog your pipes or cause any other problems!
WHAT IS HARD WATER?
You may have hard water if:
- Your water has a high mineral content and is not harmful to your health.
- The minerals in the water can cause damage to your pipes and appliances, such as clogged pipes, scale buildup on dishes and hair dryness.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD ONE ADD SALT TO A SOFTENER?
The answer depends on two factors: how much water you use, and the hardness of your water. Generally speaking, the more people in your household and the harder your water is (specifically, its hardness level), the more frequently you should check and replenish your supply of sodium chloride (salt).
